What a great week in the art room! This was my first private class after five years, and it is so, so good to be back! I loved getting to know these unique and wonderful artists—some of them for the first time, some of them I got to know better!
We dove into a TAB (Thinking for Artistic Behavior) model of teaching. We did one step-by-step painting project, but the rest of the work was envisioned and executed by the students themselves. We worked on learning new techniques and median in a cluster the first two days, then increased the independent studio work time as the week went on. Students learned about linocut printmaking, lego printmaking, tempera paint, watercolor, gold leaf, weaving, embroidery, drawing, and more!
Woven into these mini lessons were talks, as a group and individually, about the Eight Studio Habits of Mind. These include observe, develop, stretch and explore, envision, express, engage and persist, reflect, and understand art worlds. We touched on each one a little bit and some frequently! In reality, the students were already doing most of these things without realizing it. My job was simply to point it out and show them how they could take those habits to the next level.
We took some great videos that you can check out on the Instagram account here. I am already scheming for next year’s camps! See you soon!
